Baseball: Varsity VS Piedmont Academy
Results: 0-1 (Loss)
Tuesday's game treated the crowd to a classic pitchers’ dual featuring 3 all-state players on the mound: Brentwood’s Will Ahrens versus Piedmont’s Sam Wright and Tate Marks. Ahrens was masterful for the Eagles throwing only 73 pitches in 7 innings. Only 5 Cougar runners reached base as Ahrens allowed only 4 hits and issued no free passes via base-on-balls or hit-by-pitcher. One runner reached by error. The Eagles were able to touch up Wright and Marks for 5 hits and 4 walks but could not come up with a clutch 2 out hit when needed, stranding 10 runners on base.
The lone run came in the top of the first when leadoff hitter Tate Marks reached first on a 2-strike ground ball base between the first and second basemen. He was sacrificed to second base, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and then scored with 2 outs on a swinging bunt that was just out of reach by the Eagle defenders. The Cougars were hitless over the next 4 innings before collecting 2 more hits in the 6th inning.
Brentwood had several scoring opportunities, leaving runners in scoring position in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Only 3 players reached base multiple times for the Eagles: Jay Musselwhite, Peyton Massengale and Chase Everett.
