2011 SUMMER READING

The main intent for the summer reading program at Brentwood School is to encourage a lifelong habit of reading for educational growth and entertainment.  It is also intended to stimulate and challenge students' interests, to help students exercise their independent reading and analytical skills during the summer, and to establish a broad literary foundation.

Intent
The summer reading program at Brentwood School is intended to stimulate and challenge students' interests and to exercise their independent reading and analytical skills during the summer.  The summer reading program also provides an opportunity for students to establish a broad literary foundatiion and to devlop cultural literacy.  One of the best and most effective methods of preparing for SAT and ACT college entrance tests is to READ, READ, READ!

Evaluation of Reading

On the first day of school, students should bring their completed assignments for the choice books.  The required book will be discussed in class and will be evaluated with a written assessment.  Each evaluation will equal one quiz grade.  Each of the choice book assignments will equal one quiz grade.  The summer reading grades will be dispersed throughout the year; however, all assignments are due at the beginning of school.

Requirements

In order to be prepared for summer reading assessments, students should plan time wisely and read carefully, taking notes and including page references as often as possible.  Responses to the written assignments should be written in complete sentences.  The responses should include specific details and should be brought the first day of school.

  • Students in grades 7-8 will read one required book and one book from the list of choices for their grade.
  • Students in grades 9-12 will be assigned one required book for summer reading.  In addition, students in grades 9-12 will be required to read two books from the lists of choice books.  Rising 9th and 10th graders will read selections from their designated lists only.  Rising 11th and 12th graders must choose one of their books from their own grade level list of choices.  Rising 11th and 12th graders may select their second choice book from their own grade's selection list or from the lists in the grades below their own grade level.
  • Students who will be taking AP English Language will read the required book fror that class in addition to the three assignments for British Literature class.

** Individual assignments for summer reading will be given to the students by their teachers during the week prior to final exams.  If students lose their assignment sheets during the summer, copies can be obtained from the school office.
